Start with the house, not the catalogue
Greater Victoria's housing stock sorts into a few recognizable groups, and the group your house belongs to usually settles the question before an installer walks in. The older core, meaning James Bay, Fairfield, Fernwood, Vic West, most of Oak Bay and Esquimalt and pre-war Saanich, was built with oil furnaces, hot-water radiators or, after the 1950s, electric baseboards; many of those houses have never had a duct in them. Central ducted: when it fits and what to check
A central ducted heat pump replaces the furnace with an air handler and puts the heat pump coil in the airstream, so every register gets heating in winter and cooling in summer. The catch is the ducts. Heat pump supply air is cooler than furnace air, so the system moves more of it; leaky, kinked or undersized ducts a furnace could overpower become whistling registers and a lukewarm back bedroom. Ask the installer to inspect the ducts and say in writing whether they are adequate; sealing or partial repair is a common add-on with no verified local figure, so get it as a separate line. A ducted system also gives one temperature for the whole house; if the upstairs bakes and the basement suite freezes today, the heat pump alone will not fix that.
Ductless: what it is good at and where it disappoints
A ductless system pairs an outdoor unit with one or more indoor heads, each heating and cooling the space it sits in. For an open-plan main floor with baseboards, one head near the living area covers most daily comfort for about $4,500–$8,500our estimate, and each head has its own temperature.
Where it disappoints is the closed-room house. Heat does not turn corners well, so a hallway head leaves bedrooms cool with the doors shut. The fixes are more heads, baseboards kept in the bedrooms as supplemental heat, or a slim-duct unit in the attic feeding two or three small rooms. Local homeowners put it bluntly: 'every room is a room with a door, so switching to mini-splits is impractical.' Can ductless heat the whole house, and how many heads?
